The family residence permit application, step by step

In short

The application is made online through the e-ikamet system, which generates a form and an appointment at the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management for the province where you live. You attend with the printed form, the passport, photographs, the family registration record showing the marriage, the sponsor's income, insurance and accommodation evidence, and the fee receipts. While the application is pending your stay is regularised, and the card is posted to the registered address.

Before you touch the online form

Two things must already be true. The marriage must appear on the Turkish spouse's population registration record — if you married abroad, see registering a marriage celebrated abroad first. And the sponsor's evidence must be ready, because the appointment date is fixed at the moment you submit the form and the file will not wait for a missing SGK printout. The sponsor conditions set out what that means.

The application

  1. File through e-ikamet. Select the family residence permit category and the province where you actually live. The system generates the application form and allocates an appointment.
  2. Print and sign the form. Both spouses sign where the form provides for the sponsor.
  3. Pay the fees. The permit fee and the card fee, at the tax office or online. Keep both receipts — they are part of the file, not an afterthought.
  4. Attend the appointment. Both spouses attend. Bring originals and copies of everything; officers keep copies and return originals.
  5. Answer any deficiency notice on time. If the directorate asks for a further document, the period stated in the notice is real. Missing it converts a curable gap into a refusal.
  6. Wait for the card. It is posted to the registered address. Make sure the address on the file is one where post actually reaches you.

While it is pending

A properly filed application regularises your stay while it is being decided, which is why filing early rather than at the end of a tourist entry matters so much — see marrying on a tourist visa. Do not leave Türkiye between the application and the appointment without checking the effect; departures at that stage are a routine cause of lost slots.

The three points where files stall

Stall pointWhat causes itFix
Address mismatchThe housing evidence, the registered address and the address on the form do not agreeAlign all three before filing; register both spouses at the same address
Insurance shorter than the permitA one-year policy against a two-year requestBuy cover for the full period requested, or expect the permit to be cut to the policy
Passport validityPassport expires less than 60 days after the requested permit endsRenew the passport first; the permit will otherwise be shortened

Renewal

Apply within the sixty days before expiry. Renewal is the same process with a shorter file, and it is where the permit is usually lengthened — a first grant of one year commonly becomes two or three on renewal once the marriage has a documented history. Letting the permit lapse, even briefly, breaks the continuity of lawful residence that the five-year naturalisation route measures, and it is one of the few mistakes in this whole process that cannot be undone. If a refusal arrives instead, refusal and appeal sets out the routes and the deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for the family residence permit from outside Türkiye?

No. It is applied for from inside the country through e-ikamet. The route in is a visa or visa exemption, followed by the application once the marriage is registered.

Do both spouses have to attend the appointment?

The Turkish spouse's attendance is expected as sponsor, and directorates commonly use the appointment to see the couple together. Plan on both attending.

How long does the decision take?

It varies by province and by season. What is within your control is completeness: a file with no deficiency notice is decided materially faster than one that goes back and forth.

When do I renew?

Within the sixty days before expiry. Applying after expiry is possible only in narrow circumstances and risks breaking the continuity of lawful residence.
