Can you get married in Türkiye on a tourist visa?

In short

Yes. A Turkish marriage office asks that your presence in the country is lawful, not that you hold a residence permit — a valid visa or visa exemption is enough, and the marriage is fully valid. What a tourist entry does not give you is the right to remain: the 90-days-in-180 limit keeps running after the ceremony, so the family residence permit application should be filed as soon as the marriage is registered, not when your permitted stay is nearly over.

This is one of the few questions in Turkish immigration law with a clean answer, and it is regularly confused with a different question that has a much messier one.

Marrying: yes

Nothing in the Civil Code or the Marriage Regulation conditions marriage on immigration status. The marriage officer verifies capacity and the absence of impediments — age, existing marriage, prohibited degrees, mental capacity — and requires your presence in Türkiye to be lawful. A visa, an e-visa or a visa exemption satisfies that. Couples marry on tourist entries every week, and the resulting marriage is not weaker, provisional or subject to later review on that account.

The document file is exactly the same as for anyone else: see the marriage document checklist. Bring the certificate of capacity to marry from your own state, apostilled, and have it translated in Türkiye.

Staying: a separate question

The marriage does not extend your permitted stay by a single day. If you entered on a 90-days-in-180 exemption, that allowance continues to count down through the wedding and afterwards. Overstaying produces an administrative fine, an entry ban calculated on the length of the overstay, and a restriction code against your record — and a restriction code is precisely the kind of entry that later complicates a citizenship file.

Do not waitThe commonest sequencing error we see: a couple marries on day 20 of a 90-day entry, spends two months enjoying themselves, and files the residence permit application on day 85. There is no margin left for a document deficiency, and there almost always is one.

Closing the gap

The family residence permit is applied for from inside Türkiye through the e-ikamet system, and the application is what regularises your position while it is pending. The practical sequence:

  1. Marry, and collect the family booklet.
  2. Obtain the vukuatlı nüfus kayıt örneği showing the marriage on the Turkish spouse's registration record — this is the document the migration directorate wants.
  3. File the e-ikamet application immediately, with the sponsor's income, insurance and accommodation evidence already assembled. See the application walkthrough and the sponsor conditions.
  4. Keep the appointment, and do not leave Türkiye between application and appointment without checking the effect on your file.

If you entered on a visa that prohibits it

Some national visa categories carry conditions, and a small number of applicants arrive on transit or on a visa issued for a specific purpose. That affects your immigration position, not your capacity to marry. If your entry carries conditions, or if you already hold a restriction code from an earlier overstay, take advice before the ceremony rather than after the residence permit is refused — the firm's residence permit practice deals with the code and the permit together, and the note on refusals under Article 32 explains how prior immigration history is read.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a residence permit to marry in Türkiye?

No. Lawful presence — a visa, e-visa or visa exemption — is sufficient. The residence permit question arises after the marriage, as a matter of staying rather than marrying.

Does marrying a Turkish citizen stop my 90 days running?

No. The permitted stay continues to count down. Only a residence permit application changes your position, which is why it should be filed as soon as the marriage is registered.

What happens if I overstay before applying?

An administrative fine, an entry ban scaled to the overstay, and a restriction code on your record. The last of these is the one that causes trouble years later in a citizenship file.

Can I leave and re-enter after the wedding?

You can, but check the effect on a pending permit application first. Departing after applying and before the appointment is a common way to lose the slot.
